What is mupirocin skin cream or ointment? (Back to top)
MUPIROCIN (Bactroban®, Centany™) is an antibiotic. The cream or ointment is used on the skin to treat impetigo or other skin infections. Generic mupirocin skin ointment is available. Generic mupirocin skin cream is not available.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top)
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
•an unusual or allergic reaction to mupirocin, polyethylene glycol (PEG), or other topical antibiotic medicine

How should I use this medicine? (Back to top)
Mupirocin cream and ointment are for external use only. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after applying. Before applying, wash the affected area with mild soap and water and pat dry. Apply a small amount to the affected area and rub gently. You can cover the area with a gauze dressing. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not use over large areas of burnt skin.

What if I miss a dose? (Back to top)
Apply missed doses as soon as possible after the dose was due, but do not use if it is nearly time for your next dose.

What drug(s) may interact with mupirocin? (Back to top)
No interactions have been reported, but other skin products applied to the infected area may interact with mupirocin. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are using other skin products, including non-prescription skin products. Ask before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking mupirocin? (Back to top)
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your skin condition does not begin to improve within 3 to 5 days.

Do not get the ointment in your eyes; if you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.
